44) Everyone Messes Up

You don’t just kind of want it... but you’re having a hard time being consistent.

It happens to everyone. And that’s why you need a system of checks and balances. That’s why you need guidelines to follow, because everyone is going to slip up.

Think about someone eating something they weren’t supposed to eat. “I cheated? Whole day’s off. Fuck it.” We’ve all been there, right?

You’re at an event with friends or a family function, and you screw up. Suddenly it’s, “Well, the whole day is fucked. I’m just going to eat everything.” So you do.

All bets are off. Then it takes you a week just to climb back into it.

This is why it’s imperative to keep a short-term memory. No big deal. Brush it off. Keep it moving. Everybody messes up.

I’ve had stretches where I couldn’t get it together. Messed up Wednesday. Ate out Thursday. Cheated big Saturday. Had a drink Sunday. Then Monday rolls around and it’s, “Fuck, can I just get it together?”

Everybody slips. Prepare for it. Establish a system. Stay out of difficult situations when you can. And when you mess up, don’t go off the deep end. Take it for what it is, climb back on the tracks, and get back to your plan.

We’re all human. The key isn’t perfection. It’s not letting one slip turn into a full derailment.
