#291 Where Are You Going?
Recently, I was reading one of Darren Hardy’s books. In one chapter he was talking about drive, purpose, and setting goals. In the example, one guy asked another, “Where are you going?” The response: “I don’t know, ask the horse.”
What the heck does that mean? It means that he wasn’t in control of where he was going.
Although you may not be in control of the timeline, why would you leave your destination to chance?
The aimless wanderer
People think talking about their why’s or definitive purpose in life is hokey, but where are you without them? Without a destination or direction, you’re wandering. It’s the path of the aimless wanderer.
If you're aimlessly wandering, where the fuck are you going?
Lay out the plan for how you want to operate. What do you see for yourself? Fortunately, I’ve had this ability for most of my life… especially back when we were living in the trailer. I dreamed of what could be, what was possible, how I wanted to live, and how I wanted my life to be mine.
Daydreaming & visualization
Daydream and visualize where you want to go. Once you have a clearer picture, build a strategy. Once you have the strategy, take action. A strategy without action is a house of cards.
Shoot high. Why? Because even if it doesn’t 100% work out, you’re still heading in the right direction.
For me, I wanted to own my own gym. Then, I wanted to start and own my own supplement company. Then, I wanted to be on magazine covers. Then, I wanted to have my own podcast. Then, I started Max Effort. Then, I purchased a building that would serve as the home for Max Effort, CoryG Fitness, Old School Gym, and podcasting.
Did everything go exactly according to plan? Absolutely not. But I saw it in my head first. I had a starting point and a strategy. I adjusted and rolled with the punches as the obstacles popped up.
When the opportunity comes
The opportunity is never guaranteed.
Opportunities are earned, not given. It’s up to you whether or not you’re going to prepare. Are you going to put in the work now so that you’re ready to seize an opportunity when it comes up? Or, are you going to continue aimlessly wandering?
Start taking control of your life. Take the wheel. Stop leaving things to chance.
